Digg!

I don't know why but I always get nervous when I upgrade the firmware on my Treo.  It usually is done and without a hitch in 20 minutes.  But for 20 minutes my Palms are sweaty! (no pun intended)  So today I took the plunge.  Since I recently upgraded to Windows Vista, I figured there might be new rules and there were.  I needed to do all my upgrading from a blank SD card.  I just happened to have a brand new one!  So I took the upgrade from palm and dropped it on my computer and then copied the unzipped file to the new SD card.  On with the show!  After a few nervous minutes the Treo was booted back and I swapped cards to return my Treo to my Treo!  To read the step by step, hit the read more link at the bottom:

Download & Install: Windows Vista
Product Update 2.11 for Palm Treo 680 smartphone for AT&T

Learn Prepare Install Help

This method requires an SD or MMC expansion card.

Do not use a miniSD or microSD expansion card and adapter. Palm has identified that the most reliable method is to use a full-sized SD card between 32MB and 2GB. Using a miniSD or microSD expansion card with an adapter can cause issues with the update.

1 Connect the USB sync cable to your smartphone, and perform a HotSync operation. This will make a backup of your information to your Windows Vista PC.
2

Download: Treo680_2_11_ATT_SDupdater.zip (16.7MB zip file)
You must use a desktop PC and a USB sync cable to install this update; it cannot be installed wirelessly.
3 Double-click the downloaded file to decompress it. Windows Vista will unzip the file to a PALM folder containing several individual files.
4 Format the expansion card, either on your Windows Vista PC, or in your Treo 680 smartphone.

We'll show you how to do it on your desktop PC. This will erase all data on the expansion card.

  • Insert the expansion card into a card reader, and insert the reader into your Windows Vista PC.
  • On your Windows Vista machine, open up My Computer.
  • Right-click the SD Card reader, and select Format...
  • Give it a name under Volume Label, and select Quick Format. Click Start.
  • When finished, confirm the format by clicking OK, then click OK to complete the formatting.
5 On your Windows Vista PC with the expansion card still inserted, copy the PALM folder in its entirety into the root directory (top level, no subfolders) of the expansion card.
6 Remove the card from your Windows Vista PC, and insert it into your smartphone.

The update will begin immediately. You must erase all data to proceed with the update. Select Proceed when prompted with the warning shown.

The Treo will soft reset, the Palm logo will appear onscreen, the update will begin.

7 The updater may take a moment to begin. Do not disconnect your smartphone from the charger during the update process.

The update will take 8 to 10 minutes.

8 This is the final screen of the update process. Ensure the charger is still plugged into your Treo 680.

Your Treo 680will then reset multiple times, and the Palm logo will appear onscreen. Allow the unit to reset until the language selection screen ("Press Center button for English) appears. Press Center to select English.

The smartphone will then reset again, and the Palm logo will appear.

Then you'll see "Use stylus to tap center of target". Go through this process to calibrate the touchscreen.

Your Treo 680 is now updated.

Perform a HotSync operation with your Windows Vista machine to restore the data you backed up at the beginning.

Additional steps for ...

  • Good Mobile Messaging users: You will now need to re-download and re-install Good Mobile Messaging. Please visit www.good.com for help.
  • Xpress Mail users, and others: Do you use a corporate wireless email client to link to your Microsoft Exchange (Outlook), Lotus Notes or other account? Please contact your wireless email vendor or IT helpdesk to get the appropriate instructions to restore the information you backed up earlier.

Now that the update is complete, you can install your copy of Astraware Sudoku!
Get it here.

Sure enough, about 20 minutes later I am back to normal.  The only hitch I found was that Ringo seemed to have lost a file, but I quickly found it online and downloaded it over the air!  So what did this upgrade give me? Well, this from Palm's site:

What does this update do?

This software update provides device enhancements including improved Bluetooth® wireless performance for some headsets and car kits, audio quality, and media file functionality in Messaging. In addition, you'll get brand new features such as Push To Talk, for walkie-talkie functionality, and Microsoft's Direct Push Technology to get your latest email, appointments, and contacts sent directly to you, and more.

  • Push to Talk1 – With Push to Talk, you can use your Treo 680 like a walkie-talkie to talk to one person or a group of up to 29. A quick glance at your smartphone shows whether family, friends, and coworkers are available to talk before you call.
  • Corporate email as it arrives2 – Have your corporate email delivered to you with Microsoft® Direct Push Technology. Accept or decline meeting invites on the go and have your work calendar updated automatically. With the ability to access your company directory wirelessly, you can quickly address an email to a colleague just by typing a few letters.
  • IM on your Treo smartphone – Access your instant messaging service from AOL, Windows Live Messenger, or Yahoo! A tabbed graphical Mobile IM interface makes it easy to log in to your instant messaging accounts and quickly switch between IM communities3.
  • Easy access to additional services – Easily access extra services on your Treo smartphone such as TeleNav GPS Navigator and MobiTV for watching live TV4.
  • Power saving enhancements – Helps conserve battery life with improved power management and updated default system power preferences.
  • Supports larger expansion cards – Carry more of your work, music, photos, and other files, with support for up to 4GB SD expansion cards (including the SDHC format), sold separately.
  • Enhanced ringtone support – MP3 and other sound files purchased from the web or sent from friends can now be set as ringtones and alerts. Supported ringtone formats include MP3, AAC, AAC+, MIDI, WAV, and AMR.
  • Cingular, now the new AT&T – You’ll notice updated graphics reflecting the new AT&T branding, including a new look for the Xpress Mail application.
  • Three updates in one – This update incorporates three previously released software updates: Treo 680 Camera Update (January 2007), Daylight Saving Time Update (February 2007), and Treo 680 Software Update 1.09 (May 2007).

I am all for better power management!  And the wife and I have talked about how nice Push to Talk might be, so this is a service that I might explore in the future. Support for larger cards?  Always nice! I had taken all the previous updates and had also installed the IM manager!  Also, it looks like they have removed a couple of total apps like Good email and emai xpress and left links to get them if you use them!  GOOD MOVE!  Not as good as totally removing them, but at least you only have a link on there and its not wasting valuable memory for the majority of Treo users who could care less about these services!

You can bet if I find any downsides to this update, you will read it here!
