Digg!

Remember when you had to go to the store and buy film, stick it in your camera, take it out, take it somewhere, have them develop it, bring the prints home, and stick them in a drawer?  And if you did anything with them, you went and bought a picture frame, and stuck that picture in it.  You had to choose which picture to put in that frame?

Well there is a new game in town!  And Shomi is providing a very affordable way to display many pictures at once. This particular unit sells for around $70.00.  It features a 7" screen and will hold one gig of pictures. Here are some specs:

  • 480X234 resolution
  • 16:9 viewing ratio
  • accepts SD, XD, MS, MMC/MMC+ cards
  • USB port
  • On Screen Programming
  • Transitional effects
  • Built in Clock and date feature
  • Plays jpeg, TIFF and Gif formats
  • Two Megs of onboard memory

Below is my video review of this product.  Overall, a great unit.  If you like pictures, this is well worth the price. Consider the price of buying ten 7" picture frames and then think about a picture frame that transitions say 500 pictures in one frame and that makes this unit a great buy for $69.00

UPDATE: I have added another video explaining what I think are the best ways to add photos to the Shomi Digital Player

I just sent you an email from your contact me page and realized that you may not have realized that I was referencing the Shomi 7"

Thanks!

I just bought this as a gift to my mom, but I can't figure out how to save pictures on it. I was hoping to load pictures from my camera onto the frame and view them without keeping the memory card in the frame.
Any help would be great.
Try the USB
dcarico (66.168.82.xxx) 2007-12-23 03:09:46

Shawn, try hooking the USB cable to your computer. The unit has two megs of onboard memory, Once hooked to your computer, pick out the pictures you want and drag them to the unit. Two megs isn't much but it will allow you to display a few pictures without the card

Dcarico,

Where did you get the USB cable that you referenced? Did it come with the frame? I have a player but it did not come with any cable besides the power cable.

I have received quite a few emails on this review. Here is one and my reply.

Duke,
Liked your review, my unit reads sd cards fine but wont recognize an xd card. Do you have any such problems?

Merry Christmas Rich!

I can't help you there! I no longer have any products that require an XD card. I actually looked around this morning for an XD card to see if I could dump a few pics on it to see if I could get it to play, but no such luck . . . . I was thinking I gave a couple to a friend when I replaced a Fuji camera with a Canon camera that required SD cards . . Sorry I couldn't help . .

I just bought a Shomi 7 and have tried to just use my USB instead of the camera card but no pictures will appear on the screen. I have changed my pictures to a GIF format so they would show. What else can I do to make it work with just the USB? The directions don't say anything about just using the USB port. Can you help me? Thanks

Hi Cindy and Merry Christmas!
The Shomi only has 2 megs of onboard memory! So you not going to be able to load many pictures before running out of memory. The solution would be to store the images on an extra card. All the USB cable will give you is a way to transfer to the limited 2 gigs of storage. If you buy an extra SD card, (1 gig cards are below $20.00) you will be able to greatly improve the number of photos you can display. The only other thing that I could recommend would be to resize each photo to 480X234 pixels. This is the amount of pixels that the device is capable of displaying. Anything more is a waste of memory. Hope this helps and have a great day!
dcarico (75.130.75.xxx) 2007-12-30 03:13:28

Correction: I found a USB cable this morning and hooked it from the Shomi to my laptop. No Go. The computer does not recognize the player in any way whatsoever. So I have concluded that the USB port on the player is only good for USB Thumb-drives. There is no menu function to access to load a driver to your computer.

Thanks

Linda, you certainly can. I have a 512 meg thumb-drive and plugged it into the USB port, and sure enough, all the photos started displaying!

How does the Clock and Calendar feature work. I just bought this unit for my girlfriend but I cannot find the clock or calendar. The only menu I get is for Photo settings. Any clues of what Im missing here?
Menu left and right
dcarico (75.130.75.xxx) 2007-12-26 08:04:09

When you access the menu, it defaults to pictures. on the menu navigation you can go left and right. This accesses the date/clock function. I have found this very limited. The colors of the clock/date wash out against any picture that isn't very dark . . Your can enlarge it, but it covers the center of the frame and makes the pictures not very pleasing to look at . . .

Just received a Shami Digital 7" Frame for xmas, my CF card from my camera will not fit, will I have to exchange for frame that will accept different size cards
I have seen ones that accept 4 different size cards.
Duke (75.130.75.xxx) 2007-12-27 09:15:25

Tom, this one accepts four different cards, but Compact Flash isn't one of them.

when we turned on the shomi 7" player all we get is a white screen. The card is in.What do you think it may be.
Duke (75.130.75.xxx) 2007-12-27 09:14:33

It sounds as if its not reading your card. Does the screen turn white without a card inserted?
jack (98.193.242.xxx) 2007-12-28 06:41:45

yes it is still white without the card,I don't even get the menu screen. It looks like maybe to screen is set to bright but has no adjustment.it starts out gray and turns white and then stays that way.
Duke (75.130.75.xxx) 2007-12-28 13:31:46

Jack, it sounds to me as you have a defective unit . . . When I turn mine on, I get a splash screen that says "Shomi"
Donna (24.73.212.xxx) 2007-12-27 08:40:48

Duke,
Happy Holidays. I too received a shomi digital picture frame for Christmas. I am also learning how to use it. I found your site to be extremly helpful. I was trying to figure out how to down load pictures onto an SD card thru my camera since my computer doesn't have an SD slot. If there isn't a way of doing this, then i will purchase a flash drive and do it that way. So my question to you is, is there a way of transferring pictures from the computer onto a blank SD card inserted into my camera?? Thank you for your help. Donna
Happy Holidays to you!
Duke (75.130.75.xxx) 2007-12-27 08:54:20

Hi Donna! You can load pictures through your camera's USB port. Instead of transferring your pictures from your camera, you should be able to drag them from the computer back to your camera, and then insert the card to your digital player. But another solution might be this one.
{img src="http://i.walmart.com/i/p/11/12/99/78/53/ 1112997853847_500X50
0.jpg"}
This allows your computer to read different SD cards through a standard USB connection. These things are very inexpensive anymore and a great solution for those who don't have built in card readers.

trying to get my new shomi digital player to display the pictures, but it will not. I have setup the clock, and have my memory card in the player, it indicates it loads the photo's, then nothing happens. I do have a 1 MB memory card, could it have too many pictures to store? The directions indicate a 1-2-3 set up, but mine gets to 3 and rather then the photos' showing, I get the set up menu, which I've gone though, still no photo's. Any suggestions?

The documentation states that it will read one gig cards . . Nothing larger. I would try a different SD card. I know I have had trouble in the past with different brand cards in my Palm Treo. If pictures don't display on another card, then I would assume its a defective unit.
Shomi digital player power
Micha (71.79.6.xxx) 2007-12-27 23:03:08

I received the 7 inch frame for Christmas and am enjoying it. I also received a 4GB flashdrive. I put several folders of images on it and plugged it in and it started playing them right off. So in that respect I have had no troubles.
My question though is about a portable power source. I've seen many portable powerpacks online, but I'm not sure if any of those would actually work. The ones duracell offers lists running times for various devices, but a digital frame is one they list. If this would work with a portable power device, do you know the power usage equivalent this might have (ie, mp3 players, laptop, etc).

Also, why are the prongs on the plug detachable? >^-^

Okay...that should have said "one they don't list"
Duke (75.130.75.xxx) 2007-12-28 03:02:57

Micha, excellent question! I actually tried to find a definitive for you this morning as I didn't have a clue, but had no luck. My best guess: Power is going to be less than say the new Asus Eee PC which has the same screen size. Asus's web site claims "4 Cells: 5200 mAh, 3.5hrs" The Palm Foleo that never got put into production claimed a battery life of almost 5 hours. Since the Shomi has the same size screen, and is using transistor based memory, its power requirements should be less than either of the above mentioned units. Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer.

How about it readers? Can anyone give Micha a better answer?

I just received the 7" Shomi player for Christmas, with a 1 gig card included that was preloaded with photos of my family. All works well, except that when I turn it off, the clock erases and has to be reset when I turn it back on. The only way to shut it off is by holding the power switch for a few seconds. Is this normal?
dcarico (Super Administrator) 2007-12-29 11:17:10

I am not at home right now so I can't check the clock feature resetting. To be honest, we don't use the clock feature as we find it very unattractive. But as far as turning the unit off, you do need to hold the power button a few seconds before it boots down.

Good info Duke, thanks. There is an A-to-A USB cable you can use to connect the Shomi picture frame to your computer, but the computer does not recognize the Shomi as a USB device. I suspect the 2MB or RAM is only for the viewer to use internally to buffer the current or maybe the next image. I notice someone said you can plug a USB flash drive into the USB connector on the viewer and see the images on the flash drive, and that makes a lot of sense to me.

csquared, you are right! I finally found an A to A USB cable and couldn't get it to recognize the cable. I got to thinking about the 2 megs of memory and figured it was to buffer the next image or two. As far as the flash drive, I really meant to demo that as it does work by plugging in a thumb drive. I am very happy overall (as is my wife) with the Shomi, however, they really need to improve the documentation that ships with the product.

Hi Duke, I noticed in the User Manual on the "Product Spec" page on the "USB Port" line it says "Host" which I'm pretty sure means it wants a USB "Client" device of some sort plugged into its USB connector - specifically one of the "mass storage" class I would imagine. Hmmm, wonder what would happen if I connected a human interface class device like a mouse... One seriously might be able to do some pretty interesting things by using one of the small microprocessors that are capable of implementing a USB Client by using software to emulate a mass storage device. Also, I was experimenting with a USB flash drive tonight and I quickly convinced myself that one would sure want to dedicate one just to pictures as it seemed to go find every gif, jpg, etc. file of any size located in any directory of any level on the flash drive. (I had quite an assortment of stuff on the drive with numerous directories and sub-directories.)
Jason (24.173.201.xxx) 2008-01-09 22:23:38

I got the 7" Shomi for Christmas as well. Whats the deal with it not showing all the pictures or resizing them to fit the screen? And also it seems very washed out compared to the 5.5" Kodak Digital frame i bought my mom. Hers is real Crisp and clear pictures. This one makes the pictures look horrible.. Is there anything i can do to improve the picture quality on the screen?

Stupid question, but are you pushing the power button???
How do you make this work?
Bill (206.180.153.xxx) 2008-01-30 20:44:51

Hey Duke! Lost ya at slammin' it in there!!! played with the power cord and the MMC card without any success at all.
Is the on/off button suppose to click? are you supposed to HOLD the button down for a time?

Hey Carly et al, did you ever get your unit to work? I tried to turn it on without the MMC card without success. Thought maybe it had to have the MMC card in before it would work. Finally got delivery of my new MMC card and it still won't work. ...Yes, I did push the power button.
Anyone know who to see about this Christmas gift from my daughter?
Anonymous (156.80.147.xxx) 2008-04-08 08:50:24

Yes, you have to hold down the Power button for a few seconds for the player to turn on.
Should power on without card
dcarico (Super Administrator) 2008-01-31 03:45:56

You shouldn't need the card to get it to turn on . . If I were guessing, it would be bad power supply. . . To know for sure, make a trip to Walmart and explain your woes. Ask if you can grab another and use the power cord out of it to see if it won't power on. Mine really doesn't click when I push it in to turn it on . .

Try This! Copy all photos to your computer, and do a batch re-size of your photos to 480 X 234. Then put those photos on your card, insert the card and see if they won't play then . .

Can't figure out how the sleep/wake up features work. Thought 'sleep' should turn it off, 'wake up' should turn it on at the specified times, but can't seem to make that work. Put in 170 for sleep, 080 for wake, but no dice - just keeps chugging all day and night. No help in the manual. You got a clue? Thanks,
Ken
Ken (192.251.125.xxx) 2008-03-05 07:29:25

Guess nobody is monitoring this list. Still having trouble trying to make the Shomi sleep/wake-up features work. They don't seem to do anything and are not mentioned in the manual. I'd like for it to turn on automatically at 8am and off at 5pm, but can't figure out how to do that. Anybody doing something like that?
Thanks,
Ken
dcarico (Super Administrator) 2008-03-05 11:43:04

Ken, two things:
1. This is a private web site! It is in no way tied to Shomi, and therefore no one owes you anything.
2. My Shomi doesn't offer the ability to sleep/wake. I am sure that there are players out there that do, but my Shomi doesn't, and since it doesn't I can't offer you any advice, other than to take it back, and make sure you exchange it for one that has this feature, because its obviously important to you in a Digital picture player.

Maybe your frustrated with your unit, I don't know, but please don't take it out on me . . .

And one more thing. I maintain this "list" and others every day. Do you see any spam? I suggest you head over to http://shomiproducts.com and spend some time in their official FAQ, and if your lucky they might even have a contact area. I believe we have all established that the manual that comes with these products are only good for Toilet paper . . .
Shomi something!
herzogwc (12.210.166.xxx) 2008-03-06 16:56:53

My SHomi-7 will transition a few pics, around 5 minutes worth, then go to a blank green screen. All pics are jpg, and I've tried with a quantity of 100, 50, 20, now 10, it just won't work right. Do you have any ideas?
dcarico (32.130.246.xxx) 2008-03-07 04:44:34

herzogwc, have you re-sized the jpegs. I am think that possibly 7-8 meg pictures on a card, and the shomi only has 2 megs of onboard memory, so it might be able to cache the pictures? A shot in the dark, but I thought it worth mentioning
Whew....
Ken (192.251.125.xxx) 2008-03-07 13:55:08

Didn't mean to upset you dcarico! I understand that this is a private website and didn't mean to imply that anybody owed me anything. I've looked all over the Shomi site and it's not much better than the manual. I'm not frustrated with the unit, actually quite impressed with it, just puzzled about why the sleep/wake feature is on the menu but doesn't appear to work. Thought maybe some of your listeners had some advice!
dcarico (75.130.75.xxx) 2008-03-07 16:24:01

Ken, I have been in my menu about 100 times by now and have never seen the Sleep/Wake feature! I am wondering if you have a newer model than me??
Ken (192.251.125.xxx) 2008-03-10 07:17:36

When pics are displaying, I click the 'Exit' button on the remote, click the right-arrow to 'My Box', the down-arrow twice to 'SmartSleep', the 'OK' button, then the 'OK' button again on 'Sleep' and set the time to sleep. 'OK' again to back out to main menu, then down-arrow once to 'Wake Up', 'OK' to set the wake-up time then 'Exit' to back out. All seems to work fine, except nothing happens at the sleep and wake-up times I set. By the way, if I check the version: 'Menu', 'System' I see that my version is WM07A020.0020.

As much as this piece has been visited, surely someone can comment . . Can you make your player start and stop at certain times of the day??

Hey again Duke,

Wow thanks for the fast response!!! Just watched the video. My digital camera does not use an SD card it uses the Sony Memory Sticks. I have taken all the photos I have off of the camera's memory stick and they are on my computer's hard drive. What I can't seem to figure out is how to get the pictures moved from my hard drive to the SD card so that i can put the SD card directly into the SHOMI player. My computer does have an SD card slot on it and my computer does register that it recognizes the card. Only thing is, my computer keeps asking me if i want to format the SD card, so i clicked yes thinking that might be part of my problem but my computer comes back and says it cannot be formatted. ahhh! very confusing.

So I guess this goes back to my original question of how do i transfer the pics from my computer's hard drive to the SD card?

Thank you so much for your help, the website is super helpful and informative, I am glad there are tech savvy people like you to help out us that are less than savvy.

thanks again!

Jenn

You are going to need a card reader like I showed in the video! The reason being sounds as if your computer will only recognize smaller SD cards. To be sure, tell me what size is the SD card that you are trying to place in the computer's card reader? If its larger than 1 gig I would bet money (and I don't bet) that is your problem. I had an older laptop with the same symptoms. It would only read 512 meg cards and smaller. Thus the reason I had the USB card reader shown in that video.
yeah!

Hi Duke, its a 1GB ScanDisk SD card. Do you think thats still the problem? Even though my computer has an SD slot on it?
dcarico (75.130.75.xxx) 2008-04-06 18:04:26

Do you have a smaller one that you can try? I am about 90% certain this is your problem! If your computer is more than 18 months old, I am betting this is the problem.
Jenn (75.75.108.xxx) 2008-04-06 18:06:05

yes i bet that is the issue too, i will go get a card reader and see if that works. If not I'll give you a holler. Off to Target I go!! Thank you soooo much Duke! You're a lifesaver!!

Please let me know if this doesn't solve your woes and we will continue to trouble shoot but I am pretty sure that the card reader will fix you right up!
Success!

Glad to hear that it worked out! I have been blogging about mobile tech (mainly palm treo's) for a few years now. None of my articles have been more successful than these articles on the Shomi, not because they are that good, but because Shomi has not done a very good job with support for their units. Glad that I could help!

Now if you will gladly supply your address, I will send you my bill

Peace and Grace,

Sorry, but I can't help you. According to Shomi's FAQ:
Can I play music and video on my digital photo frame?
Not every Shomi digital photo frame plays music. Some of our customers have told us that they just don't have a need for that. If your Shomi player has audio capabilities, then it was built to play virtually every type of music (MP3 and WMA file formats). If your Shomi player has video capabilities, then it will be able to play .AVI video files. Since mine doesn't have the ability to play MP-3's, I would suggest you ask Shomi at their site. http://shomiproducts.com
wont play

Hey Duke, I plug in the sd card, turn on the machine and the clock menu comes up. I can set time/date, etc. but it will not play the pictures. It wont let me access the photos menu either. Any suggestions?
dcarico (199.190.8.xxx) 2008-04-24 04:25:26

Since you can set the data, I am wondering about your unit as a whole. I would try another SD card. If I still got the same results I would expect a faulty unit

Why does the clock keep resetting everytime I power it bask on?
dcarico (164.89.253.xxx) 2008-05-09 04:31:44

Have you tried from a different power source? Its strange that it would occur if it stays plugged in. Personally, I found my clock feature gaudy to look at and don't use the feature.

I HAVE FLASH DRIVE IN THE UB SLOT AND IT SHOWS PICTURES GREAT , MY QUESTION IS: HOW DO YOU CHANGE THE ORDER OF THE PICS WHEN IT PLAYS ON THE PLAYER. I WENT TO MY COMPUTER AND REARANGED THEM THERE IT STILL PLAYS THEM BY THE WAY I LOAD MY FLASH DRIVE THE FIRST TIME. ALSO DOES THE PLAYER HAVE A VOLUME FOR THE MUSIC? THANKS HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON MR DUKE.
laurie evans (75.105.128.xxx) 2008-05-15 20:35:26

ok will try that and also does it have a volume for the music? Thank- you so much for your help !!!
dcarico (24.158.141.xxx) 2008-05-13 18:34:15

Sorry so slow to respond as I have been running on empty the last few days. The Shomi reads pictures numerically, or alphabetically. The only thing you can do is rename the photos, and that still might not be perfect, it might play 21 before 20, or 11 before 1. You have probably experienced it in other apps . . . But if you want them to display in a particular order, try calling them something like vacation081, vacation 082, etc.

Roxann, you will need to pick up an SD card. If you have a card reader on your computer, you will need to transfer the pictures from your Sony memory stick to the SD card. Then, plug the card into your Shomi
