Digg!

ShomiAround the first week of December 07, I purchased a Shomi Digital Player from the Walmart.  I thought it might be nice to post up a review of it here on my site, since it was one of the first Picture Players I had seen for under $100.00.  The next thing I know, my web stats are out the roof, and many people are posting questions regarding their own Shomi Players!  Most of those questions had to do with the easiest way to get pictures from a computer to the player.  So I posted up another detailing how to use a Card reader and to dedicate a card solely to the Player. Most of these questions were very common and should have been found in the manual.  But the manual was really no help.  How about a web site?  Well, at the time, it was no help either!  In fact, it was non-existant!  Well, finally Shomi has a web site up!  It isn't much and it isn't very friendly either.  If your reading this, its because Google has me cataloged much higher than Shomi's own site because more people have to this point visited me, instead of them looking for solutions to their problems!  The only thing I can figure is they cut costs by not including a manual that told you anything at all about the product and how to use it.

I like my Shomi player!  It works just fine for me and my family.  It has been a hit in our house with anyone who visits! But  you are pretty much on your own to figure out how to use it.  I won't go into that here as I have already covered those items in two other posts complete with video.  But I did want to let everyone know that Shomi has posted an FAQ on their site, answering many of the questions that many have posted here.  Since you are already coming here instead of their own site, I have posted them below to save you the trouble.  Click on the read more link to see the FAQ for the Shomi Digital Player.

  • How do I turn my digital photo frame on?
Shomi products are intelligently designed to be super simple to use. Click here to see our video tutorial on how to start using your new digital photo frame.
    Quick Start Guide
  • What should happen when I turn on my digital photo frame?
As soon as you plug in your digital photo frame and press the Power button, the welcome screen will present pre-installed photos that will cycle continuously. To play your own photos, simply insert your memory card in to the appropriate memory card slot. Your frame will instantly load your pictures and start playing them.
  • What types of Memory Cards are supported?
Shomi players accept virtually every popular memory cards and in many cases, USB memory sticks. Check your camera to see what type of memory card you're using to see if it's compatible with your Shomi player (the types are listed on your product package and in your Owners Guide).
  • What types of pictures can I view on my digital photo frame?
Unlike many other brands of digital photo frames, your Shomi digital photo frames play JPG (the most common photo format) as well as TIF and GIF images.
  • Can I play music and video on my digital photo frame?
Not every Shomi digital photo frame plays music. Some of our customers have told us that they just don't have a need for that. If your Shomi player has audio capabilities, then it was built to play virtually every type of music (MP3 and WMA file formats). If your Shomi player has video capabilities, then it will be able to play .AVI video files.
  • How do I program my digital photo frame for slide shows or to adjust the picture?
Every Shomi digital photo frame comes loaded with cool ways to show off your photos. It's easy to get program your new player. Click here to see our video tutorial on how to program your digital photo frame.
    How to Program Your Player
  • Can I connect my camera or my computer directly to my digital photo frame?
Many of our customers have told us they prefer to use portable memory to transfer their pictures to their digital photo frames. That's why not every Shomi digital photo frame is able to make a direct connection to a camera or PC. If your player has this capability, it will be noted on the package and in the Owners Guide.
  • How many pictures will my digital photo frame hold?
This depends on two factors: a) how large each of your photos are (in megapixels) and, b) how large your memory card or installed memory is in the device. For example, a 128 MB installed memory or memory card can hold up to 140 2-megapixel pictures (a standard photo size). If your photos are much higher resolution, you would be able to store fewer photos. Take a look at our chart to see how this translates for your particular situation. Shomi digital photo frames are designed to show individual photo images up to 10 megapixels.

  • What is the warranty on my digital photo frame?

Please refer to your Owners Guide for details. We highly recommend every Shomi owner register their player here on the web site, especially if you gave or received your player as a gift.
