I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles overcome while trying to succeed.

    Digg!

All of my life I have fought a stigma!  That of being a redneck!  On the product reviews that I have done on YouTube, I usually get more comments about how I talk than about what I have said!  It is so very frustrating.  But today, I came across this local footage of a recent Tornado that touched down about 20 miles from my back door.  Listening to these folks, especially the lady, kind of helps me to understand how "Listening to how you say it" becomes more important than what you say.

Duke I know exactly what you mean. I have done my best to not have that type of accent since I was old enough to realize how ignorant even my own family sounded. Just because "other people 'round here talk thataway" does not make it OKay. I actually cringe sometimes when I'm out shopping and I hear people talking - a lot like the ones in the video. I am thrilled when people tell me I must not be from around here, haha! I realize the dialect is directly descended from the Scots-Irish settlers I am descended from, but it doesn't make it sound any less stupid. Unfortunately, my 17 year old daughter is very proud that she sounds so country (had to have gotten it from school and friends - it sure wasn't from her yankee father and me), and she even lays it on thick to annoy me. She doesn't understand the accent will be a disadvantage at college and job interviews. Thankfully none of my other kids seem to have the same affliction.
