Digg!

Long time readers know that I use Bluehost Hosting out of Utah to host my various web sites.  I really enjoy what they offer and have raved and bragged about them in the past.  As Bluehost has grown in popularity so have the email spam bots that troll their servers.  It amazes me at how I can create an email address, keep it private and hardly use it, and within a couple of months, here comes all the offers for Viagra, weight loss, etc.

Bluehost has offered for a while now a premium email filtering service. Its priced at a reasonable $1.00 per month so I thought I would give it a try.  After a couple of weeks with it, here are my initial impressions:

  • It's not perfect!  I still get one or two spams in my inbox that seem to make it through the filter.
  • Up front, plan on time to manage.  I belong to a couple of lists that look like spam to Postini.  Examples are the lists I subscribe to at Everything Treo and Burgmanusa.  Once these get trapped in the filter, you will need to log on to your Postini account and tell it to deliver the messages and to allow the sender to send to you.  Once you have approved the sender, your done!  At first I was logging on daily to allow mail just to get through.  Now its more like every three days. I suspect that soon, this will only be occasionally.
  •  It has improved all the spam I get in my box, so I like it!

I was getting about 20 spams a day and now that is more like one a day.  Postini sends me an update daily letting me know which emails are caught in the filter and gives me a chance right from the email to have them delivered.  The only downside to this, is it doesn't give me a chance to approve the sender.  So this means that the next time this sender has something to share with me, I have to give it permission to deliver to me once more.

So to wrap this up, let me just say that if your host offers Postini premium email filtering and it's priced similar to Bluehost's, in my humble opinion, its well worth the price to manage spam.  Of course, what I would love to see is punishment for persons who spend all day long sending this crap!

Hey Duke!

Remember me? I was updating my blogroll, came across your url and wondered what you've been up to.

It's funny because I just spoke to BlueHost this morning since I've been having some server problems with them lately.

Just wanted to thank you again for introducing me to the world of blogging. I'm still going strong!

Hope you have a great week!
