    Digg!

So by now it's old news, but I thought since I have some pretty strong opinions I would take the time since I finally got aG1 little, to offer mine on this new phone. There was quite a bit of hype to the release of this phone.  I think I first read of a rumor that Google would release a mobile phone around 2006.  And then when the World learned last year that Google's Mobile OS, Android would be produced by HTC, everyone started getting excited. Released exclusively by T-mobile, the G1 has been given quite a bit of attention. Has it lived up to it's hype?  Probably!  And more so, than the iPhone did.  Of course, in all fairness, it wasn't as hyped as the iPhone, and nothing made could have lived up to that much hype.

But it is out now and for the most part, everyone seems very impressed!  Shortcomings seem to include spotty GPS and G3 datastreams.  The latter could easily be blammed on T-mobile's very new network.  And let's not forget that the first iPhone was released with EDGE only and it didn't seem to hurt those sales, even when much faster networks were available through Sprint and Verizon.

Personally, I don't think the story is the G1.  I think the story is the Android Operating System. The G1 is only the first phone released to offer this OS. Everyone is trying to compare the G1 to the iPhone.  I believe the better comparison would be to compare the Operating System to Apple's iPhone OS. Google's open source attitude and developer options Vs. Apple's controlling with their thumb on everything is what is going to be interesting to watch.  I am guessing that by this time next year, we will see 3-5 other phones offering Android across at least 3 different networks.  And I predict that there are going to be developers going to town to expand the uses that Android might fall short around.

T-mobile HomeDon't get hung up on that weird design (chin, I have heard it called) of the G1. Be more interested in how good the OS is!  Be prepared for many options to expand that OS. And let's see how Google competes with the iPhone. Let's see if Microsoft can compete.  Let's see if Palm's OS 2 is too late or not.  The story isn't the G1.  The G1 is just the first in a long line of Android based phones and this OS is going to grow and morph and phone designs are going to change.  My prediction is that Android options soon will abound. HTC has proven over and over again, that they know how to design and innovate mobile devices.  They have done many wonderful things to the WM interface! I am looking forward to that same approach with Android!

    News Briefs

"There might be a world of iPhone hype out there, but if there's anything Microsoft knows how to do, it's fight back with sheer brutal volume -- and it looks like the WinMo juggernaut is just getting warmed up, with sales of 14.3m units worldwide in the past six months. Microsoft says the strong performance is based on sales of over a million BlackJacks and over two million HTC Touch phones, and that it expects to hit 20m WinMo phones sold by June. That's an awful lot of phones -- and with even hotter models on the way, so don't expect to see these numbers slow down anytime soon."

    Thanks Engadget!

I am a middle aged guy who finds much pleasure in today's technology.  Once upon a time I kept a blog about mobile tech, a web site that featured my bike rides, and then a personal site where I shared photos and videos, basically of Family.  After a time, I decided it made much more sense to combine all those sites into one.  But what to call it?  Well, not very creatively, this site became "just duke".  Just stuff I am interested in and try to follow.

By day I work for a large chemical company, and by night I play bass in a Christian Rock band. But every day I check out the web sites following the trends around mobile devices.  When I have time, I enjoy designing Templates for Joomla and Wordpress. You can download those here on this site!
